Theory/Author Name and Background 1.Select a Grand or Mid-Range Theory that is appropriate to your practice setting. 2.Describe the theorist′s background in detail and discuss how their experiences have impacted the theory development. 3.Examine crucial references for the original and/or current work of the theorist and other authors writing about the selected theory. 4.Identify the phenomenon of concern or problems addressed by the theory. How are they defined? (theoretically and/or operationally) Is the author consistent in the use of the concepts and other terms in the theory? 3.Interpret how the concepts are defined. Implicitly or explicitly? 4.Examine the relationships (propositions) among the major concepts. Evaluation 1.Identify explicit and implicit assumptions (values/beliefs) underlying the theory. On what assumptions does the theory build? 2.Examine if the theory has a desсrіption of the four concepts of the nursing metaparadigm. If so, how are they explained in the theory? If the metapardigm is not explained, what elements do you see as relevant to the theory and why? 3.Discuss the clarity of the theory. Did it have lucidness and consistency? Application 1.Examine how the theory would guide nursing actions. 2.Describe specifically how you can use this theory in your area of nursing (Administration). Synthesis Essay 2 Assignment This essay (10 pp.) should be an argument essay on one of the issues in our readings on Food & Health (you will submit your topic and thesis for pre-approval). Use your critical thinking skills to develop an interesting, arguable thesis (central idea, assertion, perspective). Another way to think of a thesis is as your answer to the central question you are asking. In this case, you will be asking a question about one of the Food & Health issues in the readings, some of which we will have discussed in class, e.g., How is the profit motive in the food industry related to changes in the Western diet? What part should government agencies play in the U.S. food chain (e.g., warning labels, regulation of genetically modified foods, subsidies for farmers, inspection)? How does marketing influence cultural norms and eating patterns? How is food marketing related to gender norms? How is U.S. food culture being transformed by farm-to-table, local, slow food, sustainable farming practices, and other movements? How can “food deserts” be transformed? How can we address food insecurity? You should be able to express your arguable thesis in one or two sentences. (With permission, you may also design your own topic, if it incorporates the issues and articles in the readings.) Contextualize your argument, giving the reader a brief overview of the subject at the beginning of the paper. Do not just assert your opinion – be sure to offer sufficient evidence to support your thesis. Avoid overly emotional appeals. Be sure to include and address at least one counter-argument, acknowledging your opposition fairly and accurately. You will need to include 10 citations/references: 4-5 from the Food, Health & Medicine readings assigned, 1-2 from the readings on Business & Economics and 4-5 outside sources from the library databases only. Citing these references will lend the paper more depth or breadth of reference by illustrating that you have included perspectives other than your own (connecting your ideas to the readings and class discussions). Try to establish connections between the readings you cite, creating an interesting dialogue between your sources while reinforcing your own thesis. Please pay special attention to introducing and integrating your quotations with appropriate and graceful signal phrases. Please use MLA 8 style in-text citations (parenthetical author-page citations) and attach your Annotated Bibliography or a Works Cited page. Organization: make a list of the points you need to make in order to explain your thesis. What does your reader need to know in order to understand your research question and answer? Try to organize your points logically. Keep the paper “unified” or focused on each of your points. Devote one paragraph or more to each of your points. Papers should be typed, double-spaced, in 12 point type (Times Roman font or something similar), with one inch margins. Proposal Due W April 5 Annotated Bib.
