Reproductive Health
The project will work across national, governorate, district and community levels to increase access to high-quality RH/FP care. Efforts will focus on strengthening national FP polices, curricula updates and education, QI processes, and on improving the clinical skills of FP providers, including maternity staff providing PPFP services. The project will increase PPFP skills of maternity providers such as postpartum IUDs and lactational amenorrhea method. Based on findings from the long-acting reversible contraception study begun during the Quick Start in one governorate, the project will increase the capacity of providers in these methods at the district level and primary health centers. The project will work with community and religious leaders to generate demand for spacing out intervals between the last birth and the next pregnancy so that the mother can breastfeed her baby for the first two years to promote good health. To achieve this healthy interval, couples will have access to effective FP inclusive of long-acting FP methods. The FP team will work collaboratively with maternal health and nutrition to provide integrated services.
Maternal Health
The project will provide technical support to the MOPHP at the national level, and with GHOs and DHMTs at the subnational level to institutionalize, scale up and standardize evidence-based interventions to address the main drivers of maternal mortality. The project will work with the MOPHP and partners to implement nationally acceptable MNH standards, protocols and guidelines for managing normal deliveries and obstetric complications. Emphasis will be placed on
competency-based training approaches complemented by quality improvement approaches and enhanced M&E, including support to the MOPHP and GHOs to refine national maternal health indicators. Maternal health interventions will be closely integrated with newborn health, FP and nutrition activities at all levels of implementation. Efforts to reduce negative health outcomes due to gender disparities, early marriage and early childbirth, and disrespectful and abusive care will be consistently interwoven throughout maternal health efforts in Yemen.
Newborn Health
At the national level, the project will support the review and implementation of the Yemeni Newborn Health Strategy and the Maternal Child Health Acceleration Plan within the context of the Every Newborn Action Plan initiative. In line with the global call to action to reduce newborn mortality, the project will focus on prevention and management of the three major killers of newborn infants: birth asphyxia, prematurity and newborn infections, and will provide technical support to the MOPHP to build the platform to scale up the known lifesaving interventions to address these causes. The project approaches to improving newborn health will be closely integrated with maternal, FP, child and nutrition strategies. Competency-based skills training for newborn care will be integrated into the national midwifery and medical pre-service and in-service curricula.

Child Health
The project will work with UNICEF, WHO and other partners to advocate for the expansion of health services through CHVs, including case management of pneumonia, diarrhea and malaria. At the governorate and district levels, the project will strengthen management capacities by adapting the RED tools and approaches to incorporate, for example, data on case management. The overall environment at the PHC units will be improved through an adapted QI approach to encourage health providers to practice the IMNCI procedures. In addition, the project will introduce innovative initiatives such as working with rural, informal drug sellers to provide better care for childhood illnesses.
Immunization
The project will provide technical support to build the capacity of the national EPI as well as focus on working in governorates and districts with the highest number of unvaccinated children. Districts will be supported in implementing the RED approach, which will help build the capacity of managers and service providers through trainings, supervision of activities, OJT and regular immunization program monitoring. The project will share its experiences from other countries that have had successful programs in strengthening fixed post health facility services and outreach sites in remote areas.
Nutrition
The project will focus on the most vulnerable from pregnancy to two years of age (the 1,000 days concept) and prevent the major forms of malnutrition including acute and chronic malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies. The project will use the cost-effective and sustainable approach for improving nutritional status of using 80% of resources to prevent malnutrition and 20% of resources on curative measures to address and reverse malnutrition. The project will improve health worker preparedness by integrating essential nutrition actions, recently endorsed by the WHO, using evidence-based approaches by using Trials of Improved Practices methodology to customize interventions to the local cultural context, into services at both the facility and community levels. Because of the multiple underlying causes of malnutrition, the project will form linkages with other sectors and promote multi-sectoral approaches with agriculture, education, local government, disease control, and water and sanitation to address the barriers to improved nutritional status and use/generate local evidence to inform nutrition programming, and identify opportunities for integration at the community and facility levels. The project will improve nutrition integration into health services in facilities and at the community level and support addressing the multiple barriers to optimal nutrition through the multi-partner and multi-sector MOPIC-led SUN initiative at both the central level and in the project-supported governorates.
