Your assignment is to write an op-ed. You will be making a short review of one of the readings included in the course syllabus and offering a short analysis of a case of war/violence of your interest. For instance, you may review Paul Farmers notion of suffering and structural violence by analyzing a case of gentrification or red lining in NYC. Also, you may use a current event taking place in the U.S or abroad, such as the recent escalation of the conflict taking place in Gaza, and analyze it through the perspective of the anthropology of war and violence.
I will assess your op-ed using the following criteria:
Clarity of ideas and writing.
Depth of understanding of the literature (reading).
Depth of analysis of the case.
Originality.
Ability to make connections between anthropological concepts and real-world situations.
Ability to communicate the intricacies of violence/war in a non-sensational way.
This is not an academic paper, which means that you may (and should) write creatively. Do not think about the instructor as your only audience, rather imagine that your op-ed will be read in the Sunday edition of a local newspaper. Considering this, your goal is to take an academic concept/method and apply it to a concrete instance of war/violence as a way to educate the general public about issues concerning our societies.
Your paper should be between 550 and 700 words. It must include quotes and references of the reading you are using, and must have a title.
