1. Zewei’s article is about the Confucian-based international relations system of China’s celestial empire. The Western-style of international relations won over China’s system and formed the foundations of the state-based system we know today. What are three ways China’s former system of international relations differs from the nation-state system we know today? (Provide three points with explanations using the article).
2. Steinberg discusses a concept called “soft power.” (1) What is soft power? (2) According to Steinberg, what are two ways NGOs use soft power for good, and what are two ways NGOs use soft power in less-than-perfect ways?
3. Cragg, Arnold, and Muchlinski describe the execution of Nigerian activists including Ken Saro-Wiwa. They indicate that this was a pivotal event in the discussion of human rights and business. According to this short article, what was the response to this event, and what types of actors (states, IGOs, NGOs, non-state actors, etc.) responded to it? After reading this piece, who do you credit with moving the discussion of human rights and business forward?
