Current Event #2 – Week 1 (This is your first CE summary.) Each week you will research and then post a geography-related current event (CE) which you’ve found in the popular media (print newspapers, magazines, online newspapers, etc). “Current” means an article published within the last week when your summary is due. News stories with geography-related content can include anything related to weather (hurricanes, tornadoes, droughts, record snowfalls or temperature, etc), natural disasters (earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, etc), climate-change/global warming, pollution, demographics, border & boundary changes/disputes, mapping, species habitat, water, etc. The one realm into which I do not want you to stray is anything related to outer space (planets, asteroids, NASA-anything). Granted, geography encompasses and touches an enormous range of scientific and cultural areas, but this is a geography, not an astronomy course. If you are unclear as to whether or not a story qualifies as geographic, please contact me before you do any more work on it. – Once you have identified a suitable and interesting Current Event, post a summary (not a cut-and-paste of the article) in the CE section of Discussions. – You must also respond to at least one other student’s Current Event posting by.. This response needs to be at least five complete sentences and demonstrate that you’ve read that student’s posting. – Full points for your CE is 10 points; full points for your student response is 5 points, for a total of 15 points for that week’s CE. – You will not receive any points for simply responding to another student unless you have also submitted your initial post. – You may respond to more than one student’s CE, but you will not receive extra points for doing so. Five point is the maximum number, no matter how many additional, different students you address. – You may only use the same article once during the semester. – Always make sure you identify the source of your story, be it printed or off the ‘net. – Each response must demonstrate critical thinking and writing at a college level. Good grammar and spelling are important. Your response must completely address all issues raised. – CE posts involve summarizing the article in your own words; “cutting-and-pasting” or using long, unaltered sections of text the article into your post, is considered plagiarizing and is not allowed. Any sort of plagiarism will result in a zero for that assignment and an Incident Report to Student Services. Any additional plagiarism may result in a failing grade for the entire course, – You may not reuse the same CE. “Current” CE’s means within the last two weeks of its publication. – You may use comics/editorial cartoons. Just make sure to display the image about which you are writing. – I will be monitoring all your posts. It is perfectly acceptable to disagree with another student’s posts, but please do so in a respectful manner.
