1. Introduction
This handout sets out the structural analysis that you need to perform on three different
types of structures: (a) a truss; (b) a beam; and (c) a frame. You will be working individually.
You are expected to analyse the structures using:
1. The structural analysis approaches covered in the lectures, namely qualitative
analysis, compatibility of deformations, virtual work, and direct stiffness method.
2. The structural analysis software covered in Topics J/K (Computational modelling).
For this assignment, you will be using the SAP2000 software. On the module
Blackboard webpage you can find instructions on how to install it on your laptop.
You may submit either a handwritten or a typed report (maximum 12 pages), or a
combination of handwritten and typed answers. You may use the report template available
on Blackboard. The submission must be in the form of a copy of the Report (.pdf) and
electronic files of your SAP model (.sdb).
2. Case-study Structures
Please choose the basic data for each case-study structure based on your Student ID number.
Use = , and use the section properties provided by SAP2000, under Frame
Properties > Section Properties.
