FAILURE ANALYSIS INDIVIDUAL PROJECT RE-SIT
OBJECTIVES
In this assignment, you should be able to demonstrate your ability to:
assess likely causes of component failure from a knowledge and analysis of service conditions and
other information;
apply and interpret a range of microscopic and analytical techniques in the forensic investigation of
metallurgical or materials failure;
critically assess the evidence and, thereby, correctly determine the cause of failure;
write a report of the investigation in a style appropriate to the parties commissioning the report.
METHODS
In the appendix of this report, you will find a briefing to conduct a failure investigation, which will identify the client
and provide an outline of the incident. You will also find a range of evidence, gathered using a number of
techniques. On the basis of this, and research of web-sites or public domain literature, you will need to come to
some hypothesis, or hypotheses, of the sequence of events and the failure mode. Having done so, you should
examine the evidence to see whether this supports or contradicts your hypothesis (altering this where necessary)
and then compile your final report.
ASSESSMENT
You are required to submit an electronic copy of your report by 2 pm on Monday 15th August 2022 to the
assignment pigeonhole in the re-sit area within Minerva. Late submission will be penalized at the standard
University rate (5 marks per calendar day, or part thereof). Submission later than 2.00 pm on Friday 26th August
is not permitted. This should be a concise report of your investigation as you would write to your client. It
should be in an appropriate format, not exceed 4 A4 pages in length, excluding references, use no smaller than
10 pt typeface and cover the following aspects.
