Rationale
The Dance pedagogy course is core to the MSc Dance Science and Education
programme and has been designed for students coming from a variety of backgrounds
in the field of dance. The Dance Pedagogy course focuses upon critical pedagogies
relating to teaching and learning the art of dance. The course also introduces students
to a range of scientific principles and practices that underpin development and
improvement of dance skill in performance. To this end, it is designed to explore and
provide a sound base of knowledge relating to current educational, philosophical, and
science-based issues and approaches in the teaching and learning dance environment.
These perspectives will allow the dance practitioner to develop specialist skills and an
awareness of the changing trends in the dance environment including the use of
technology.
Written Assignment- 4000 words
Consider the use of technology within current pedagogical approaches and methods
used within dance environment. Critically debate how technological advancements
have changed the way dance is approached within a specified teaching and learning
context.
The work will be structured and written in academic style and may relate to and be
illustrated with references to the student’s own area or dance genre of research
interest or professional expertise. You will create your own title for the assignment.
In the assignment, you will demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the
advancements within your chosen area of technology and how it relates to your
chosen teaching and learning context. The work will be critically informed by the
relevant literature, citations and references must be used to support the discussion and
debate that you develop.
Formative task 1: Submit a detailed plan/scheme of your work that will include:
The indicative content, choice and definition of technology and dance
context
Headings of the sections that you will develop in the assignment
An annotated bibliography of the literature that you will use to develop the
discussion and debate
Formative task 2: Submit a draft section (up to 30%) of the work for formative
feedback to feed forward in to the final submission. Also, submit a paragraph or
diagram explaining how this work will be developed and situated in the assignment.

Final summative assessment: you will submit the 4000 word assignment as a
word document to turn-it-in, the indicative content may include:
i. An introduction to and rational for the chosen technology and dance
environment
ii. The pedagogical context within which you will discuss and debate its
application
iii. A discussion surrounding the advancement and application of the
technology
iv. A summary and potential future development of the technology with
your chosen context
v. The bibliography and references to all literature used to inform your
work
The work will draw on current peer reviewed literature, key texts and any other
relevant sources of knowledge.
Guidance
1. Check the formative and summative task submission dates.
2. Plan and structure the work in order to critically address the assignment
remit
3. Take each and every opportunity to engage with the formative tasks and
use the feedback to feed-forward in to the final summative submission
4. Acknowledge any contributions and ensure that the style of the writing is
scholarly
5. Reference the all work in the appropriate manner
6. The presentation of the assignment should be professional and academic
