MGMT5701: Assessment, Term 1 2022 4 In-Lecture Quizzes – 30% (3 quizzes worth 10% each) There will be three online quizzes held in the lectures during the semester. Each quiz will be worth 10% of the course mark. The quizzes are designed to assess your ongoing learning in the course. Each quiz will only relate to the weeks immediately before it and content that has not already been assessed in a prior quiz. The date of the quizzes will not be available prior to the lectures. Please do not email the lecturer asking if a quiz is on in any week – to ensure fairness, there will be no advance notice provided to any student. Students who cannot attend a lecture where a quiz is administered must apply for Special Consideration following the Special Consideration Policy. Video Presentation – 30% Due via Moodle 1pm,13th April 2022. An individual video presentation addressing the questions below. Length = 5 minutes (with the usual 10% leeway) Max file size = 5GB Video task: In this assessment, you as an individual will produce a video addressing questions below. The video should be 5 minutes in length. While you may use visual aids (PowerPoint slides etc.) such aids should not overshadow your appearance in the video. At some point you must include a significant piece to camera, free from other visual aids (you appear full screen). It is recommended that you familiarise yourself with the assessment outline and marking rubric in this guide. Further guidance and an opportunity to ask questions will be provided in class. Question: You are an HR manager for a manufacturing company that operates one factory in a CME and one factory in an LME. The company is considering expanding its operations into a third country. Considering the key elements of employment relations in each country, provide advice to the company Board via video as to which country you would propose for the new factory including: 1. Describing the main characteristics and differences in employment relations in each country. Use relevant theory to support your explanation of these characteristics and to explain key differences. o Main characteristics might include trade unions, other structures of workplace representation, legal structures, political structures. 2. What is your recommendation including the reasons why you are making that recommendation. Key facts to consider: You decide which specific LME and CME the company currently operates in, and which specific country you are going to recommend as the location of the new factory. Make sure you choose an MGMT5701: Assessment, Term 1 2022 5 LME and a CME – not countries with the same varieties of capitalism nor ones that do NOT fall into the LME or CME categories according to the theory. It does not matter what the company manufactures – just consider a generic manufacturing scenario. You should not be providing any information about what is being made. The company will need to build the new factory as well as recruit (and possibly train) a new workforce. The Board takes a broadly pluralist approach to employment relations but might be willing to consider new forms of employment relations if appropriate. The Board wants to focus on reducing labour costs in the new factory. When the previously family owned company was founded in 1910 it had a paternalistic approach to its employees, providing benefits such as workplace childcare, a free staff canteen and excellent retirement benefits. However, its recent stock market listing as a public company may require it to change focus The company has, in the past, had some industrial action both countries, although there are differences in unionisation levels. Required elements of the video: The video is to be 5 minutes in length. Any ‘credits’ roll to show research references and acknowledgements must be included within the time length. The video must clearly indicate your name and student id. The video should not simply be slides with an audio background or with your face in a tiny corner of the screen for the whole presentation. You must complete a significant (full screen) piece to camera. While slides and other forms of animations are, of course, useful when showing certain types of information, this video assessment requires that we see your face and hear your voice. A failure to embed yourself into the video will result in a fail grade for this assessment task. You must demonstrate critical thinking; thus, the video must be an evaluation rather than merely a description of the topic. The video MUST acknowledge any of academic sources (books, chapters and peer-reviewed journal articles), as well as any other sources (official reports, organisation websites, ABS data, media articles, etc.) drawn upon. This will assist with authenticating your claims and giving credibility to your voice. Reference requirements: You must refer to a minimum of six (6) academic sources during your presentation to provide evidence supporting your arguments. Examples of the type of background research expected from students are: published research in peer reviewed academic journals, mainstream media sources, and government, union, and company sources of information. Web-based sources whose legitimacy is not readily verifiable (e.g. private blogs, Wikipedia) are not recommended. Examples of the academic journals you might search include (note this list is not exhaustive): Academy of Management Journal Academy of Management Learning and Education Academy of Management Perspectives Academy of Management Review Business Communication Quarterly Business Horizons Cross Cultural Management Employee Relations Group & Organization Management Journal of Business Communication Journal of Industrial Relations Journal of Labour History Journal of Management Education MGMT5701: Assessment, Term 1 2022 6 Journal of Management Information Systems Organization Science Other Notes and Requirements: Remember – this is an employment relations assignment. While employment relations touches on many other disciplines (you learnt this in the first few weeks), this video is not an assignment on economics or any other discipline so please don’t cover in detail issues that are not directly elements of employment relations. Look at the lecture notes to work out what the elements of employment relations might be and discuss in your tutorial groups – you have been taught all of these elements in the first few weeks of the course… How do I make the video The need to make a video can feel daunting. But you don’t need a Hollywood production studio to complete the assessment. As long as you have access to a mobile phone or laptop, you have all the tools necessary. You can look at these sites for some ideas: 6 Tips for filming on your phone https://shootsta.com/blog/6-tips-for-filming-on-your-phone/ Loom – Screencasting software https://shootsta.com/blog/6-tips-for-filming-on-your-phone/ Screencast-o-matic https://screencast-o-matic.com/home How do I submit the video After recording the video using your computer or on a mobile device, upload the video to Moodle ahead of the assessment deadline. Please note that late submissions (without advance notice, medical documentation and approval from the subject coordinator) will incur a penalty as outlined in the Subject Outline. How will the video be assessed The assessment rubric sets out the criteria upon which the video submission will be assessed.
