BUS3054 – Strategy, Organizations & Society
Seminar 5: Collaborative Strategy
Objectives
To examine how companies can work collaboratively with others to
achieve the organization’s strategic goals
To explore the challenges of forming JVs, a type of strategic alliances
Questions – The case of the
Nora-Sakari JV negotiations
Discuss:
What do the two companies wish to achieve (what are their needs)
What can the companies contribute (e.g., knowledge, skills, cash)
What risks might arise in structuring the deal around each others’
terms
Do the companies have other alternatives available
Q1
What do the two companies wish to achieve (what are their needs)
Lecture 12 covers some of the relevant theories. Please revise these so
you could use them to evaluate the strategic relevance.
Think about how the case information can be linked to the relevant
theory.
There is no single “right” way to analyse it.
Better analysis would perhaps consider the differences, complementarities and
weaknesses in the application.
Q2
What can the companies contribute (e.g., knowledge, skills, cash)
Here, you could consider contributions in terms of available resources
and capabilities.
What theories could you draw on
Q3
What risks might arise in structuring the deal around each others’
terms
What are the issues of this kind of equity-based strategic alliance
Here you may want to review and draw on theory from lecture 13.
Q4
Do the companies have other alternatives available
What alternative arrangements to a strategic alliances might be
possible
Lecture 12 might provide some insight.
Questions – Part 2
With your classmates, discuss the JVs you have identified and
researched.
Which companies formed the JV
What is the purpose of the JV
What theory could you use to explain the rationale
Instructions: Again, think about how the examples you have chosen can be
interpreted using the theories covered in lecture 12 & 13 (as well as your
further readings).
Thank you.
Please feel free to ask any questions.
