Our class uses a three-phase speech strategy: 1) Complete sentence outline (about 30% of the actual speech) 2) Brief speakers notes on small note cards (just a few words per point) 3) The speech itself You will be able to use a rubric (checklist) to insure your outline earns maximum points. But to simplify it, let me point out a few simple things: 1) Be sure to include your name and contact info, as well as your speech title, at the top. 2) You must have three specific parts to your outline Introduction, Body, and Conclusion, each of which has specific information and is clearly labeled. 3) The informative speech (and outline) do not require citations or visual aids though you MUST ALWAYS cite sources in APA style IF you use other peoples words or ideas. 4) The outline consists of complete sentences: EVERY point and sub-point MUST be a complete sentence (including punctuation). However, when you read your completed outline aloud, it should take about 1 1/2 minutes to read the outline for a 5-minute speech, or 2 minutes for a 6-minute speech (thats about 30% of the word count). 5) All outlines (not just in this class) MUST have at least twins which means if you have a section with an A. it must also have a B. (and can have a C., D., etc.); if you have a 1. you must have at least a 2. 6) Speakers notes are different than the complete sentence outline they are NOT complete sentences, but contain brief reminders to keep you on track.
