Page 1 of 5 FLUID MECHANICS 1 (AMME2261/9261) FINAL EXAMINATION School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering, The University of Sydney ANSWER ALL PARTS OF ALL QUESTIONS AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS PROVIDED ON THE CANVAS EXAM SITE CAREFULLY. Page 2 of 5 SECTION A LONG ANSWER WORKING QUESTIONS You must show FULL working and ALL assumptions for all parts of all questions in this section. Question 1-Calculation based extension question [25 marks] Question 1 will have 4 parts (parts a-d as shown below), and each of these parts will be similar in style/length to calculation based MCQ questions from the 2017 or 2018 exam papers. Obviously the difference now is that these are working style questions, so part marks can be awarded. a) [6 marks] b) [6 marks] c) [6 marks]: d) [7 marks] Page 3 of 5 Question 2-Long answer question [25 marks] This is a question that will be similar (ish) to the longer “worked-solution” questions from the 2017 or 2018 exam papers. However, because you have more time than in previous years (the 2021 exam is 2.5hrs long-not 2hrs), this question will be a little bit longer than in previous years. Page 4 of 5 Question 3-Long answer question [25 marks] Same style as with question 2. Page 5 of 5 SECTION B- TYPED ANSWER LONG RESPONSE QUESTION You MUST type your response to this question, it CANNOT be handwritten. If you include equations/sketches, those portions can be hand drawn and then scanned and included in your answer. Question 4-Open ended long response question You will be provided with a scenario, and you will need to provide a TYPED text response. Your response may or may not include equations and sketches (it depends on the question). This will be a very open-ended question and is testing your understanding and knowledge of fluid mechanics. Maybe the scenario will involve you providing advice to a client, or you explaining how you might go about designing some system that requires fluid mechanics knowledge/calculation approach. It can be anything. The response should be around 1pg long (including any sketches/equations) and a maximum of 2pgs long. Anything past the 2pg limit will NOT be marked. Your answer can be in the form of bullet points or structured writing-it is totally up to you. I do NOT care if there are typographical errors/grammatical errors-I am marking your technical response. SAMPLE QUESTION: You are designing a new rocket. What sort of initial calculations might you want to do to work out the very basic performance of the rocket What are the important considerations How would you be able to design a model-scale rocket and ensure that it behaves in the same way as the real thing Be as specific as you can in your answers, and you may use sketches and/or equations if necessary to support your response, but they are not a requirement. You should aim to finish this question in 40mins. Make sure you give yourself 5-10mins to think about your answer and then start writing. YOUR ANSWER MUST BE TYPED AND IT WILL GO THROUGH TURNITIN. ***ANY HANDWRITTEN RESPONSE WILL NOT BE MARKED*** *****************END OF EXAM SCRIPT*****************
