LAND2121 Introduction to Landscape Architecture Assignment 3: Illustrated Essay Project weighting: This project is worth 45% of the total for the course. Duration: Week 7-10 Due: Week 10 Friday 22nd April, 21:00hrs (9pm EST) to Moodle Overview For this final assignment, you will produce an illustrated essay using the improved drawings you’ve created for Assignment 2, plus one more type of drawing: a beautifully rendered, 3-dimensional view of the project. The purpose of this final assignment is to synthesise (definition: combine, merge) the material you’ve found in your research this semester. You will be writing an essay about the project using the research you have undertaken, and the course literature we have studied each week to support an argument that answers the following question How does the design of your project site create a place that serve the higher purpose of social and ecological justice for all peoples and all species (after Landscape Architecture Foundation ‘Declaration of Concern’ 2016) Learning Outcomes This assessment addresses all the Course Learning Outcomes (1-5) Assessment components Your essay will be at least 1500 words, and no more than 2000 words in length (This does not include References and Appendices). It is important to remember that your writing must go beyond simply describing the project. Use literature to define the terms environmental justice and social justice clearly, and therefore set the parameters for your argument. Think about the biography of the designer. When did this project take place on the ‘timeline’ of his/her professional development and what is the relevance of this in relation to the essay question Think your way into the design. Carefully review any written statements by the designer(s) to begin to appreciate issues of design philosophy. How do these statements relate to the physical reality of the built work Look beyond the immediate site to understand the urban and/or landscape context of the project. 2 Imagine that you are visiting the project or walking through it. Produce ‘word pictures’ and use your sketches and analytic diagrams to illustrate the qualities of the place You must answer the essay question using at least four (4) of the assigned course readings this term. One of these course readings must be “The Beholding Eye” reading For this reading, select three of Meinig’s examples and analyse your project using those perspectives. For example, view the project like a “landscape as history”, or a “landscape as place”. You may also suggest your own interpretation of the project, as Meinig’s “ten versions of the same scene” are not the only ways landscapes might be interpreted. Use the analytical drawings and diagrams you produced in Assignment 2 to support your argument. Consider how the composition, spaces, axes, and use of materials are revealed in your project. The concluding section of your essay will include a 300-400 word personal reflection. In your own words, explain what you have learned about contemporary landscape architecture as an action of environmental and social justice from studying this project and designer in detail. Drawings: Re-do your drawings, in accordance with the feedback you have received from Assignment 2. Study Catherine Dee (2001) and other books about landscape drawing available in the Leganto link. The new drawing that you will do will be a 3-dimensional view of the project, such as: an aerial perspective or an axonometric, or a Sketch-Up model of the project, if you are familiar with this program. It can be rendered or illustrated with colour, if you like, or with shading and textures to express the unique qualities of the project such as the materials, plantings, and unique design objects or elements. This drawing will be scanned and dropped into your essay at the point where it can best be used with the text to show the full extent of the project. Or, it might be used as an illustration on the cover page of your essay. Your choice! Use the Harvard, in-text referencing system to cite all your references. Be sure you understand how and when to use in-text references. There will not be an opportunity for resubmissions of this assignment, and your assignment will not be successful if you have not cited the sources of your information. When in doubt, always use an in-text reference! References list: correctly format, and only list sources that you have referred to in writing your essay. You should have a minimum of 8 references (journal articles, books, interviews, videos, etc.) in your Reference list. Submission Requirements 1 x A4 PDF file (including the BE Individual Plagiarism Declaration form) Submit your essay as one combined PDF document through Turnitin. Your essay should be set out in portrait format on A4 page, illustrated with your own sketches (scanned and dropped into the document). I would recommend using InDesign as the program that helps you layout your work.
