1 AVIA3401 – Aviation Safety and Resource Management Assessment 1 and 2: Analysis of organisational human factors (25% + 10%- rewrite- Assessment 2) Overview Written individual assignment worth 25% (plus 10% for the rewrite due one week post handback – Assessment 2) is due on 8 March at 0900. Students are to submit their assignment through Moodle. The content of this assessment must relate to the topics and material covered into this course Detail First, find a recent incident or accident relating to human factors in transportation that cover one or more themes/topics covered in this course. The incident or accident ideally should have occurred within the last two years (you can expand the time frame if you cannot find an incident). It is preferred, however not required for the incident or accident to be aviation related. Second, cite the article title (exactly from the source), Third, provide a concise summary/synopsis of the incident or accident in no more than 50 words. The final sentence in this summary/synopsis must highlight the contributing factor/s which relates to the theme/topic covered in this course. Fourth, discuss in detail the theme/topic central to the incident or accident (no more than two theme/topics), drawing on the academic literature to clearly explain the theme/topic, how it contributes to incidents or accidents, and critique the literature, and importantly the research on theme/topic. This all needs to be completed in no more than 1,500 words. You should also use no fewer than six HF/safety reference sources in your submission (e.g., journal paper and books, not internet sources including Wikipedia). ***Importantly, this assignment is not about retelling the incident or accident. In contrast it is about examining in detail a theme/topic covered in this course, and how it applies to an accident. *** 2 Important Points to Note: It is recommended that you structure your assignment roughly as follows: 1. UNSW Aviation assignment cover sheet, 2. Page 1 – Title page, Title, student name and word count. 3. Page 2 onwards – Cite the article, concise summary/synopsis of incident or accident, detailed discussion about theme/topic central to incident or accident. 4. Last page (new page) – List of references. Remember; there should be at least six references. References must be cited and formatted in APA (American Psychological Association) style. The submission date is 8 March at 0900. Smarthinking (feedback on your first draft regarding writing, references, etc) will be used for this assessment (Assessment 1 only). Smarthinking will be a hurtle, where you must obtain the feedback first through Smarthinking, prior to being able to submit your assessment online (through Moodle). It is important you allow sufficient time for this process. UNSW offers other resources to assist with writing. These resources can be sourced via the below weblink. One such resource is one-on-one academic skills consultations. To book, use the below link. https://www.student.unsw.edu.au/skills Applications for an extension of time must be made through MyUNSW. Please note, applications are assessed centrally and not by the lecturer. Late assignments, without a reason deemed satisfactory by the lecturer, will be penalised by a loss of 5% of the total possible marks for the assignment per day, including weekends, up to a maximum of 5 days. No assignment can be accepted after 5 days. 3 Marking (Tips to ensure you remain on track) Marking will focus on the following areas. Synopsis In 50 words summarise the incident or accident, and State what your essay should be based on (cause – no more than two). For example, a leading cause in the accident was… Body Clearly define/explain terms. Discuss/explain causes/contributing factors. Importantly, this is an academic piece of work, as a result, you need to find evidence to support your claims (use academic sources such as journal papers or material from book chapters). Discuss research in this area to support your claims/findings. References Reference list must be titled with the word References. Reference list should only contain references used and cited in text. Must be formatted as per APA. General Proof read your work. Write in third person, not first (I, we, our). Double space your submission (as per APA). Submit your work on time. Use Australian English only (not US English). Expand acronyms. Do not discuss the incident or accident in detail in the body of the paper
