She does not want us talking about his childhood and growing up, she wants something deeper that will be arguable and debatable.
Formal theoretical literary analysis is not a book report.
Note that this assignment requires that you 1) use one of the lit theories we discussed to 2) help readers who’ve already read Peter and Wendy learn something new or see it in a different way. You’re not helping them learn something new if you’re just telling them what happens in the book or what it’s “about.” That’s called a book report, and it’s what you do in elementary school. The examples and outlines in our modules offer explanations and examples for how to analyze and avoid a book report. A book report will earn a grade of zero.
Make sure you re making an argument-something that someone can dispute-and not just reporting. Sometimes you have to examine your own words very carefully to make sure you’re doing this correctly. To accomplish this, a thesis statement often contains value words; good, bad, terrible, should, etc.
If your thesis isn’t debatable, you’ve failed the assignment before the instructor even looks at the rest of the paper. That’s because fit’s not debatable, you’re just reporting on facts. That means your writing is essentially a book report, and in college a book report leads to a grade of zero.
The thesis is arguably the most important part of your writing. If it doesn’t work, nothing will. That’s why you must spend considerable time composing and polishing
