Lets practice our rhetorical analysis skills on a popular Ted Talk. While Im not a big Ted Talk fan in general, there are a few Im quite fond of, and this is one of them.
After watching the video in full, identify and analyze 1-2 rhetorical strategies Urban uses in his talk. Our goal is to explore which strategies he uses to the best effect.
The hardest part about rhetorical analysis is taking the analysis far enough. For example, its not enough to say, Urban uses a lot of humor in his talk. Thats just identifying rhetorical appeals. Our goal is analysis. In this example, once youve identified the strategy/appeal, you need to go further by discussing how and why the humor is effective for the intended audience and message.
