Each student is required to write a 2,000-2,500 word, double-spaced research paper (with
proper citations/Chicago or MLA) on a topic of their choice. The paper should focus on an
existing myth, misconception, misrepresentation or any widely held view about Japanese
culture, society and history (example: Japanese samurai always used swords; female rulers and
empresses were only puppet rulers, etc.). In this paper, the student needs to formulate an
incisive question that challenges the conventional view and use academically authentic
sources to construct clear and original arguments in written form
