During the Harlem Renaissance, Black artists often examined and wrestled with aspects of blackness. Passing was one of the great novels written at that time. Examine the issue of passing in Passing. Both Irene Redfield and Clare Kendry/Bellew pass for white, yet Irene resents Clare for passing. Compare the passing of each woman and discuss their reasons for doing so. In your discussion, analyze how passing is more complicated than racial self-hatred.
Essays should be typed, at least a 12 point font, double-spaced and three to four pages in length (at least 800 words). Please note that if you do not reach the word minimum, you will not pass the assignment. There is no need for a works cited section but do place your references in the text such as (When Harlem was in Vogue, 8).
