will read part of Theorizing Race in the Americas by Juliet Hooker. Please read Part I Ambas Americas: chapter 1: A Black Sister to Massachusetts: Latin America and the Fugitive Democratic Ethos Frederick Douglass and also read Part II Mestizo Futurism: chapter IV A Doctrine that Nourished the Hopes of the Nonwhite Races: Vasconcelos, Mestizajess Travels and US Latino Politics. Also, should read the Introduction and conclusion of the book. You will write a one thousand word essay on what are the major arguments that Hooker is making about Douglass and Vasconcelos? Do you agree with her argument or do you disagree? As usual, it is not important whether you agree or disagree with the evidence you use to make your argument. Please cite your work using MLA formatting. Please cite inside of the text and at the end have a bibliography of works cited. Obviously, to make an argument you will need examples to prove your points. Ultimately the subtext of your essay should give us insight into the nuances of how race and racism were constructed in the time of Frederick Douglass and Jose Vasconcelos in Latin America and the United States.
