As we have talked about, arguments are often shared to benefit a group of people rather than just to prove that we are right or win a debate. When we engage in persuasive exercises with people who share a community with us, whether at work, in our families, at school, or in our town, we have a greater chance of success when we carefully consider the different stakeholders and how our recommendations may affect them.
<
<
For this units discussion, you will analyze different stakeholders positions in your argument and find one source that demonstrates an area of common ground you expect to find among the many stakeholders. Be sure to review this weeks learning activities on search techniques before searching for a source. Then, respond to the following prompts in at least two well-developed paragraphs:
<
<
Share your revised thesis and tell us who the key stakeholders are. Whom does this issue affect that we do not often hear from? What aspects of the argument do you expect most stakeholders to agree about? Identify three search terms you could use to find evidence that helps to illustrate the common ground between stakeholders. Hint: The learning activity Choosing & Using Keywords can help you figure out what search terms to use as you seek out common ground sources.
<
Using the search terms above, find one source in the Purdue Global Library that helps to illustrate the problem and establish common ground with stakeholders. Identify one main idea from the source you want to use and why you selected that source.
<
Ask an open-ended question to classmates based on what help you need either finding common ground or doing the background research on your topic.
<
Finally, wrap up your post by sharing the authors name, the title of the source, and the link to the source.
<
For peer feedback this week, think about what stakeholders may be missing from the post. Offer some other ideas about what the different stakeholders might agree about or answer the open-ended question.
<
<
NOTE: You can begin working on a references page for your upcoming assignments by tracking the key elements of each source:
<
<
Authors name Publication date Title of source Publication information URL
<
Academic Writer can help you identify the type of source you have and create a properly formatted citation in APA style.
<
<
REFERENCE THE READING:
<
Refer to and credit the unit reading concepts to help validate your ideas and give you practice with using and crediting source information. When you refer to concepts from the units reading, be sure to use a signal phrase like According to . . . [name of reading]. If you are directly quoting the reading or another source, be sure to use quotation marks and cite the source using proper APA in-text citations and full references. See the Purdue Global Writing Centers Using Sources for resources on APA citation formatting.
<
<
WRITING EXPECTATIONS:
<
All discussion posts and responses to peers should be written in complete sentences using Standard English. Before posting, proofread for grammar, spelling, and word-choice issues. Be sure to respond fully to every aspect of the discussion.
<
<
RESPONSES TO INITIAL POSTS:
<
Respond to at least three of your classmates initial posts. Be sure to address their writing concerns and what you think they might also do to achieve their writing goals. Advance the discussion by asking relevant questions that motivate your classmates to continue the discussion. A strong response would be around 100 words. Also, refer to and credit unit reading material in your posts to help support your ideas.

Good Morning,

In my prior thesis, I chose to discuss the parking issues in my community. I dont feel that Ill be able to write a good paper on that subject. Im thinking about changing my thesis to talk about mental health in the military, or lack there of in the military police corps. I feel like I have more knowledge of that subject and that I can do more research on it. My new thesis will sound something like this. The United States Army should focus more on mental health help because its affecting soldiers morale in the workplace, their personal life at home, and it would help to reduce the amount of soldier suicides.
<
<
The key stakeholders will be the United States Army as a whole, the Military Police corps, and the units leadership. I feel like this issue affects individual soldiers more as they usually dont want to admit that they need to talk to someone and they bottle everything up inside of them. I also think that the key stakeholders will all agree that more needs to be done about mental health help in the military. Some search terms that could be used could be military mental health, military chaplain, and law enforcement mental health.
<
<
After using the search terms I mentioned before, I found a peer reviewed article that talks about the mental health issues in the military and how military chaplains can help. One main idea that I want to use is why soldiers dont want to seek help for their mental health issues. I chose this idea because I struggle with mental health as well and it took me a long time to finally see someone about it.
<
<
How does my new thesis sound? Is it too broad and needs more work? Is this a good subject to write a paper on? Any input is appreciated!

My original Thesis was potholes in roads throughout the community can cause vehicle damage. Ive decided to not change my topic but make it not just about potholes but the impacts of road quality. This includes the road quality, surface conditions, and structural integrity. With my more specific topic my new thesis statement would be The city of El Paso should improve road quality because it causes vehicles damage, impact a drivers behavior, and make pedestrians feel unsafe. The key stakeholders would be vehicle operators, pedestrians, and the street and maintenance department of El Paso. The aspects of the argument that I expect most stakeholders to agree about is driving on damaged roads frequently throughout the community causes damage to your vehicle. While driving through low quality and damages roads can impact drivers behavior by making suddenly decrease speed, suddenly increase speed, and even swerve to avoid potholes. Having these bad driving behaviors will make pedestrians feel unsafe while walking along roads within the community.
<
Three search terms I could use to find evidence that helps to illustrate the common ground between stakeholders road quality, communities, and vehicle impact. One main idea from the source I would like to use is according to The Transportation Research Board writes that building new highway systems and increasing road networks could enhance the quality of life for local residents, enhance the ability of the community to attract new business investment, and ultimately also raise property values. I chose to use this because it gives important reasons on how roads can impact a community. Does my thesis statement seem good enough and if not, how can I improve it?

Hello everyone,
<

In St. Louis, homelessness is a significant issue. Most homeless people are veterans who have bravely served their nation. The homeless veteran community seems to be the group most impacted by this situation. Despite the citys greatest attempts to solve this issue, the number of homeless people is consistently growing. The mayor and other local representatives have made it clear that these people have nowhere else to go. They are already homeless and often have very little money, so citing them and fining them will do nothing to help the situation. Even Park seats and sidewalks now have anti-homeless spikes installed, preventing these miserable folks from even sitting down to rest. Instead of perceiving these people as a burden, the city needs to see them for what they are human beings with feelings and loves of their own. These people, who are often just unfortunate, could use more resources from the city, such as more homeless shelters, community service projects that help them, the creation of a local authority sponsored homeless camp for them, the acceptance of donations, and similar things. One idea I have is to use grants or contributions funded by the federal or state governments to renovate most vacant buildings in St. Louis. The city would be able to deal with the homeless population as well as the danger presented by abandoned buildings by doing this. Although in risky ways, homeless individuals frequently use abandoned buildings. As a vacant building collapsed on him during a fire that was mistakenly caused by a homeless person, an STL fireman lost his life while performing his job. If the city of STL utilized its resources well and got additional financing from the government or through contributions, several of the major issues it is currently facing might be solved. Do you think the neighborhood will gain if unoccupied buildings in St. Louis city are repaired? Whether you concur or disagree, why?
