Assignment. Students will complete two empirical reports using APA format. Reports will be based on creating their own unique hypotheses (at least 3) from the attached data set, analyzing, and reporting/interpreting the results.
Requirements. Empirical reports consist of a title page, abstract, full Method and Results sections, and one-paragraph Introduction and Discussion sections. The Introduction will consist of (a) a descriiption of the basic study methodology and (b) a hypothesis or research question. The Discussion should (a) summarize the Results and (b) connect the results to the three hypotheses or research question. No references are needed.
our paper will have the following:
APA style title page
Abstract
Introductory paragraph introducing the topic as well as your overall hypothesis you are looking at
Method – this usually includes subheadings of Participants, Materials, and Procedure. Some of this you will need to run descriiptives to get how many people, how many male/female, age range – just like you did for your PSPP Labs. For Materials and Procedure, do the best you can with the info in the Codebook (Materials would be was this a survey? what kind of questions/answers were there; Procedure is how the data was collected).
Results – naming your three hypotheses, what tests you ran to test each, and reporting the numerical results on each, saying whether your hypothesis was supported or not; please remember that descriiptives cannot be used to test a hypothesis as there is no probability (the “p”) accounted for.
Discussion – did your results surprise you? confirm your initial thoughts?
If you want more guidance, looking up a professional journal article in the library, under databases, PSYCH Info, on a topic of psychology might give you a little idea of where this format is coming from. It should not be completely new if you took a course such as Abnormal Psychology where you had to collect articles for the Literature Review…you just may not have paid as much attention to the rest of the study.
