After reading Persepolis, please respond to the two bolded questions and any one of the remaining questions:
1) The experiences of various characters within Persepolis, starting with Marjane and her family’s, are coordinated with their social class. What relevant economic and social class divisions do you see revealed in the work, and how does that effect the characters’ experience of the revolution? How does it affect Marjane’s experience of the revolution and her negotiations with various authorities? (BOLDED)
2) Some critics of Persepolis have claimed that Satrapi’s view of Iran is too one-sided, and that it is too easily pro-Western and anti-Islamic. Do you think this is true? Explain. (Draw upon the two associated articles assigned for this week — i.e. Abu-Lughod and Badran) — when forming your response. (BOLDED!!!!!)
3) There are various forms of captivity and freedom presented and explored in Persepolis. What prevents people from being completely free in the work, and in what ways do they try to reach or create freedom?
4) In what ways are the experiences of the characters in Persepolis differentially affected by their gender?
5) Persepolis is written by an adult, but from the narrative perspective of a child. What license (or limits) does this narrative perspective grant the author and how is the work different from what it might have been from the perspective of an adult memorialist?
