IMPORTANT NOTICE: You will have the freedom to choose your own Native American culture to research and study. Your submission, though, MUST be in your own words. As always, if there is ANY evidence of plagiarism, the submission will receive an automatic 0. I will not grade on grammar or how well your assignment is written. I want this to be IN YOUR OWN WORDS. As always, please know that it is painfully easy to detect plagiarized submissions. For any questions regarding what constitutes plagiarism, please refer to our original syllabus (it is posted) and the handbook.
Assignment: We have spent (will spend) considerable time discussing Elman Services 4-tiered model of social evolution (i.e., Band, Tribe, Chiefdom, and State societies). In the process, we examine how various institutions may change as societies become larger and more complex (i.e., social, economic, ideological, and political institutions). I want you to choose 1 (one) Native American culture from the United States to examine. This can be either a pre-historic or historic Native American society.
I want you to prepare a 4-5 page (double spaced, 12 font, normal borders!!!) write-up that describes and discusses the basic characteristics of each of the following institutions: Economic, Political (if appropriate), Social, Military (if appropriate), and Religious. (If this helps, you might consider preparing a few paragraphs on each.) After commenting on the characteristics of these institutions, tell me where you think your culture might fall within Services hierarchy! Theres no hard and fast rule, but it would be interesting to see if your research kind of matches up with that of Elman Service. And, feel free to comment on any challenges, surprises, or frustrations you experienced while trying to classify your culture. Most importantly, ENJOY learning about a new and amazing group of people!!! And feel free to comment on anything really interesting, unique, or exceptional that you come across!
