This assignment is weighted at 10% of your final grade. Although it is not due until the end of the module, it is advised that you gather information and research as you learn about anthropology and its subject matter. In this short essay (1.5-2 pages), you will review the associated video on the Windigo and the material on the Navajo Skinwalkers. In the assignment, you will discuss the folklore surrounding the legend of the Windigo (see link at bottom of the page or on the main Module page) and draw parallels between the Windigo, Skinwalkers, and Zombies from a functional perspective. In other words, you will try to understand the role that these beliefs play in the society in question (Note: you can draw on any of the material that has already been presented in Module 3).
Your essay will include the following considerations:
Where did these legends originate and who has appropriated them (used them for different purposes)?
Are linguistic connections made in the video? If so, include that material.
What connections exist between Windigos, Skinwalkers, and Zombies?
Do these beliefs have a purpose? If so, what are they?
You will be graded on
grammar and composition
use of terminology that has been used in the textbook
providing examples from the textbook support your points
content accuracy
Note: Your comprehension of content in Chapter 15 and related Module 3 is being evaluated. You are permitted to use MyCanvas content for this assignment. Essays that do not use the textbook will be considered incomplete and will receive a failing grade of zero. Essays that do not make use of the material that has been offered in Module 3 will be considered incomplete as well. Material that is derived from other sources will not be evaluated and will impact your grade negatively. Direct quotations are not permitted.
You are expected to use an editing program like Grammarly prior to submitting your work. Assignments that are found to have any originality issues will be considered an academic offense and a zero will be assigned to the work following the Academic Integrity Policy at Mohawk College.
