This project is in partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI), one of the
states largest employers and insurance providers. The skills learned in this project are some of
the same skills BCBSRIs actuarial team uses every day. This work-based learning project is
intended to illustrate how the knowledge gained in a classroom can directly transfer into a
career. Insurance actuaries analyze data and statistics, like the ones used in this project, to
calculate risk. They use this calculation of risk to help set insurance premiums and minimize the
financial impact of that risk. According to the labor market information site Burning Glass,
actuaries in Rhode Island have a median salary of $90,000 and hold a bachelors degree. As
part of this project, this class will have a presentation from a member of BCBSRIs actuarial
team about their job, the skills they use, and their own career path.
