The Legislative Assignment is an opportunity for students to demonstrate effective communication and leadership skills to address a current legislative issue pertinent to the nursing profession. Students will demonstrate the importance of ethical, legal, moral, and professional accountability as a nurse leader/manager. Refer to rubric located on D2L. This assignment contains two parts.
For part one, students will research the GNA website to view the Advocacy page and the Legislative Platform. Students will select one current issue most interesting and/or most important to them. Students will write a 2-3 page paper describing the issue and the importance to the nursing profession. Students will need to include at least two additional resources and follow APA format.
For part two, students will identify their senators and representatives (link in D2L). Students will compose a letter to one of them expressing concerns and rationales for how they would like the legislative senators/representatives to vote in a particular direction for the issue in part one. See “Successful Lobbying” on D2L/content tab/legislative day. *Students are not required to mail the letter, but are encouraged to do so.
