Dominant Culture and Co-Culture: A dominant culture is a culture within a society whose attitudes, values, beliefs, and customs hold the majority opinion. A co-culture refers to groups of people living within a dominant culture who are clearly different from the dominant culture Example: So, if we refer back to the previous slide, where I asked you to think about the different cultures of which you are a part, you may say (for example) that your dominant culture is your heritage (Italian, Haitian, Greek, Jamaican) because its above all how you identify yourself. But, your co-cultures, which also has a system of values and beliefs may be that youre a student, a brother, a sister, a mother, father, member of a club, avid sports enthusiast, etc. According to Edward T. Hall, cultures differ not only in the languages spoken but also in the degree to which people rely on factors other than words to convey their meaning. Different cultures rely on words to convey most of their meaning, while others rely mainly on context. Low-Context Cultures In Low Context cultures, direct verbal messages are used and speakers are expected to say what they mean. Examples of low-context cultures would be the . and Germany. High-Context Cultures In High-Context cultures, there are indirect meanings and messages are understood by referring to unwritten cultural rules and subtle nonverbal behavior. We have to read between the lines much of the time to arrive at a meaning of a message. Examples of high-context cultures would be most Native American, Latin American and Asian Countries. You should understand that culture is not just our backgrounds or heritage. Although that is a good example of culture, it doesnt stop there. Co-culture is an important piece of culture. Understand that we have rules and cultural rules/norms. You may hear a similar concept in psychology social norms.
