Just like your first one, for the second case study, we will follow the lead of many of the readings we are engaging with and apply mediatization theory to an aspect of our experience in one of the themes we are studying.
You will choose a theme (let’s say politics) and then seek a case study from your own experiences (let’s say we are wondering how Justin Trudeau has been able to parlay his apparent good looks into a political movement). Referring to our course concepts and readings, you will show how the case demonstrates processes of mediatization within that theme or aspect of your life.
This essay should be about 750 – 1000 words, 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced, and uploaded to Brightspace as a Word or PDF document. Your essays should be cited in APA or MLA format. Your essay should include the following elements:
Introduce your case study – tell us what you have seen or experienced and how your case relates to a theme
Give us some theory – briefly explain how you are understanding mediatization in this case study
Apply the theory – tell us how you think that your example demonstrates how the theory works
Who cares – remind us why this is important, and how theory helps us to understand how the world of mediatization communication and media operates
There is a rubric attached here, and rather than apply specific initial notes, we will provide feedback in each rubric section (introduce the case, theory, apply the theory, who cares, and style and presentation) to justify a grade out of 5 for each criteria (Brightspace then re-calculates your grade based on the 20 points awarded for the assignment). Look for feedback in each section.
