Essay Assignment
Your final essay should be a minimum of 1,500 words (2,000 max) focused on
describing and analyzing the issue of Student Loan forgiveness currently being litigated in
the Supreme Court:
1. Listen to the arguments presented in front of the supreme court (both recordings)
Department of education vs. Brown
Biden vs Nebraska
2. Research the Biden-Harris Administrations Student Debt Relief Plan
3. Use an economic analysis to decide whether student loans should be forgiven? Do
you agree or disagree? Use the research and the argument presented to support
your opinion.
4. Answer the question: would forgiving the students debt help or hurt the economy?
Should we be concerned about fairness when making this type of economic
decision? (Details provided below).
While the focus of the paper is on the descriiption and analysis of the student loan
forgiveness, the paper should also include an introduction to the student loan borrowing
generally (including a brief history, overview of the goals and purpose, and structure).
In preparing the paper, you will need to find at least six (6) articles (academic articles,
Wikipedia doesnt count) to support your theory/thesis. In order to fully analyze the
issues, at least one of the articles must focus on benefits/pros and at least one of the
articles must focus on the criticisms/cons of student loan forgiveness. The third, fourth,
fifth, etc. articles may focus either on the benefits/pros or criticism/cons (your choice).
The paper should include the following:
1. Introduction should include your thesis (meaning the theory that you put forward
as a premise to be maintained or proved).
2. History and descriiption of student loan borrowing
3. Descriiption of the Biden-Harris Loan Forgiveness Plan
4. Critical Analysis of the student loan borrowing for college/graduate school and the
Biden-Harris Loan Forgiveness Plan
5. A critical discussion of which article(s) make the better case for or against the
proposed forgiveness plan and how it could be used to help or hurt the US
economy.
6. A conclusion summarizing the paper and including your concluding thoughts on
the subject.
The paper should be prepared using APA format (see below). A reference page
(doesnt count as part of the minimum of 1,500 words (2,000 max) should be

included and in?text citations should be used to cite the points taken from the
selected articles. DO NOT USE A COVER PAGE.
APA Style:
This course follows APA style format for all written assignments. All written assignments
must be produced using software that is compatible with Blackboard. Assessment of
written assignments will include use of APA format, writing, grammar, quotations, and
references. APA Style Central is also available at http://apastylecentral.apa.org/.
Expectations for Written Work: The following are basic expectations for all written
work:
Your paper should be minimum of 1,500 words (2,000 max)
One-inch margin for all sides of the page (e.g., top, bottom, left, and right side
of the page).
The font is 12 point.
The paper is double spaced.
Due dates:
Writing Paper: Please upload a copy of the first draft version of your written paper to
Blackboard by April 23, 2023 at no later than 11:59 pm.
Note that your draft paper needs to be your full paper. I will not accept or grade any
draft papers that are less than the required minimum (1,500 words). Your draft paper
is 50% of your full paper grade.
The second draft and final version of your paper is due on May 16, 2023 at no later than
11:59 pm. Note that no extension can be given because the deadline is the last day of
class, so please plan accordingly.
