(1,000-1,250 words) Use at least three primary sources and four secondary sources to answer one of the following three questions:
What is a pirate? Formulate a definition for “pirate” and use primary and secondary sources to explore the extent to which “Pirate” serves as an adequate way to label examples of piracy of the past and present.
Were pirates gentleman sailors or ruthless marauders? Use evidence to unpack two conflicting archetypes of pirates which we discussed over the course of the semester. Using evidence, make an argument as to whether one or neither are wholly accurate representations.
To what extent did Golden Age pirate communities present a utopian alternative to colonial society? Use evidence to consider the transgressive elements of pirate communities which we discussed over the semester – especially as it pertains to social and economic structures.
