Abstract: The purpose of this study is to evaluate and improve hopelessness among LGBT adults, who are at an increased risk for experiencing feelings of hopelessness and suicide ideation. A mixed-methods approach will be used to assess the effectiveness of an intervention designed to address hopelessness in this population. Participants will complete pre- and post-intervention measures of hopelessness, depression, and suicide ideation, as well as qualitative interviews to gather in-depth information about their experiences with the intervention. The intervention will consist of six weekly group sessions, which will utilize cognitive-behavioral techniques, mindfulness practices, and social support to improve hopelessness and increase feelings of empowerment and resilience. It is hypothesized that the intervention will result in significant reductions in hopelessness, depression, and suicide ideation, as well as improvements in perceived social support and resilience. The findings of this study will contribute to a better understanding of the effectiveness of interventions for addressing hopelessness among LGBT adults and will inform the development of future interventions.

Syllabus Info:
Approximately 15-20 manuscript pages, double-spaced, excluding references and appendices. Should present a brief review of the relevant literature, the hypotheses to be investigated, the research design (including measures, subjects, and procedure), and a brief description of the proposed studys limitations. Appendices should include copies of measures, coding manuals, or other material necessary to conduct the research (if readily available). As the focus of this course is on methodology, the literature review section of the proposal should be relatively brief (e.g., 4-5 pages). The research proposal is written in APA style, however, it differs in two important ways from the research report. It is written in the future tense and it does not include the results and discussion sections. The proposal should include these sections:
