Identify which state(s) the crime(s) took place in. If your media content covers more than one state (or international violence), pick one state to focus on for this essay.2 (2) Re-visit the FBIs Crime Data Explorer. Be sure to navigate to the Hate Crime Dataset and select your state. Toggle through recent years (i.e., 2019-2021) to compare the data. You are welcome to visit earlier years if that helps you better understand the data. There is also a Supplemental Hate Crime Statistics, 2021 report. In addition to this digital front door for UCR data, keep in mind that you can also explore the data here. The Hate Crime by Jurisdiction tables allow you to explore hate crime data by state. (3) Visit and analyze another source of hate crime data that will enhance your understanding of recent bias-motivated violence in that state. For example, if California is the state, there is an annual Hate Crime in California Report published by the Attorney General. There are also nonprofits and other organizations, commissions, etc. that release hate crime data.
In addition to analyzing the data in the two sources (UCR + other source), you should also: (1) reflect on the context, limitations, methodology, etc. of each data source, (2) weave in data from any other reports/sources that helps strengthen your analysis, and/or (3) explain the states hate crimes legislation (or lack thereof) and how that could impact data collection.
Prompt: The primary purpose of this assignment is to analyze the strengths and limitations of hate crime data reports. This is your opportunity to show the importance of being a critical consumer of data.
