Obesity has always been known to be a lifestyle disease attributed to consumption of excessively fatty foods. Families in developed countries are facing a huge task of regulating the calorie intake given to young children for they do account for a higher percentage of obese people. A number of restaurants, eateries and food joints in the United States sell food that have high fat and protein content.
Discussion
From the graphs shown in the appendices below, Five Guys is the favorite fast food joints of the University of California students and the most famous restaurant. This restaurant could be in proximity to the college which makes it accessible to the students. They do not have to spend extra money on transport which would go to buying extra meals. The restaurant could also be having excellent customer service like entertainment, relaxation lounges, free desserts and hospitable staff. The restaurant could also be popular compared to Subway and Burger King from the availability of parking spaces and other services like adequate 24 hour security in its environs. The famous hotels have a rich menu especially suited for college students offering sweet, fresh take-away and quick bites. The proximity of nightclubs could be a complement for students since they can eat and drink within the same locality. Besides, the restaurant’s mode of publicity could be effective over face book and Google where the students prefer browsing. The restaurant could be offering facilities such as free internet and music, facilities that college students have higher preference.
In figure two, there was a sharp increase in obese rates for both limited and full service restaurants though the rate of obesity for full service restaurants was lower than that of limited service restaurant. The rise in obesity rates is not influenced by the rise in the real prices of food since obese rates have been increasing despite a steady increase in food prices. In the case of food taken at home, the obese rates have not been rising but reducing with a small increase in the year 2004. It further reduced significantly in the year 2006 and rose sharply up to the year 2009. Limited service restaurants and snacks contribute to higher obesity rates as compared to instances when food is taken at home.
Conclusion
The impact of fast food on the society is immense. From the discussion above, fast food is a favorite among students. Fast foods have high fat content and tend to result in excessive weight gain among people. Obesity is high among people who take food in fast food restaurants than those eating at home. With lack of exercise and little strain, the body accumulates unused energy as fat. There will be increased cases of heart failure and deaths. Hospitals will be under pressure to absorb these cases. Economic growth will slow down due inefficient workforce. This also puts strain on physical training facilities as they try to reduce on weight. There will be higher demand for food than the rate of production of food items.
