Rights of a Woman in the Society

Wollstonecraft’s “From A Vindication of the Rights of Woman” defends the rights of women, asserting that women have the same rights as men and deserve to be treated as full human beings. For example, women deserve the same education that men receive. Wollstonecraft intends to persuade her audience that serious social harm can come from limiting women’s mental and moral abilities. She makes the connection between slaves and western women, and this applies to those also in the middle class. For example, she refers to gendered oppression against women as slavery and therefore, highlights the plight of women in regards to enjoying their rights. Wollstonecraft insists that females were not created to complement males, but with duties to carry both in public and in the spiritual realms. Rational education is a key concept to give women an opportunity to contribute to society. In the 18th century, there were so many discrepancies to the right of women as they were perceived to be incapable of rational or abstract thought. Wollstonecraft states that women were believed to be susceptible to sensibility and thus, too fragile to think clearly. However, Wollstonecraft along with other women helped decrypt the myth, proving that women were capable of rational thought, and thus deserved to be educated.

In modern society, there continue to exist certain discrepancies in the society that prohibit women from enjoying their rights in full. For example, education is a basic right for every person in the United States, but in the earlier days, women were not allowed to attend school. In the same concept, women were not allowed to vote, but this notion has been dismantled with every individual being considered equal to the other. Despite this, there are positions in society that women have no full potential to compete with men. For example, in leadership positions, employment opportunities, and wage gap in which women are on the lesser side (Szymanska and Beth).
