Our readings this week, of course, speak to the hiring process and provide great information on it. As an additional insight, I am sharing two articles written to guide candidates through a very uncomfortable trend.
One of the trends in the hiring process is for the interviewer to ask candidates to provide their W2 as indication of their prior wages. Below is the link to an article regarding this. The second article provides information for candidates on interview issues.
Asking for this information is not illegal; however, it can be questionable. There is a school of thought which believes asking for a candidates W2 may be discriminatory against seasoned and higher paid candidates. Age because people who work longer tend to make more than those with shorter work histories; higher paid because a prospective employer may feel a person who accepts a lower salary will leave as soon as a better paying job becomes available. It may put a lower paid worker in a weakened negotiating position.
After reading the articles, I would be interested in your perspectives. Do you think this is something hiring managers are justified in requesting? If so why? What are your thoughts about the advice regarding the eight mistakes?
