Womens Sexuality and Role of The Government in Its Regulation Discussion
I have been debating on how to structure this discussion given the current political climate as well as all the issues that are being discussed in the news, including:
Black Lives Matter
Protesting the flag or the anthem
#Metoo Movement
Womens rights and the glass ceiling
Womens sexuality and the role of government and society in its regulation (including abortion)
Confederate flag and statues as a symbol of the south, not racism
The rise of the alt-right as a symbol of racism or nationalism
Bans on immigration of certain groups and/or registering them
Guns rights vs. regulation
Gender neutral bathrooms
Some of the issues of the mid-1800s have not been thoroughly resolved, or have given rise to new predicaments, or are lessons from which we can learn much about the enduring crises of our democratic society. So, I would like to take this final discussion and tie what you learn in Unit 5 to a current issue.
Step 1:
You will research and select 5 current events articles from respectable media outlets.
These articles can be from liberal, moderate or conservative media SO LONG AS they fall within the gray circle that says Great Sources of News and the green oval that says Great In-Depth Sources of News in the attached image.
NOTE: I do not count media outlets outside of the above circles as wholly and/or consistently credible, therefore, they should not be referenced in your discussion.
Step 2:
After reading the current events articles, create a minimum 750-word post to discuss the controversial topic you chose, as well as the articles you read that will be used to support your discussion (you must cite them throughout your discussion not just when you use a quote).
Make sure to tie the current event back to the history of the time period studied in Unit 5 (or a previous unit as appropriate). Nothing exists in isolation! Make the connections across time like a historian. Underline these connections when you make them.
YOU MUST POSE A HIGH LEVEL, OPEN ENDED QUESTION TO GENERATE DISCUSSION BOLD THIS QUESTION.
Please do not ask questions such as What would have happened if ____ didnt happen? Credible historians deal with what happened, not alternative history or what could have happened. Questions that can be answered with a simple Yes/No or Agree/Disagree do not count as high level/thought provoking.
Quotes should be limited to 0 or 1 and not more than 15 words long.
Provide in-text citations and create a Works Cited list in MLA format at the end. DUE WEDNESDAY, 5/1 BY 11:59 PM.
MAKE SURE TO PUT YOUR TOPIC ON THE SUBJECT LINE OF THE POST SO OTHERS KNOW WHAT YOU ARE WRITING ABOUT.
