After the Civil War, Americans faced a new challenge of reuniting the nation. How would the ex-Confederate states be treated? Would they be allowed to reenter the nation? What would the fate of the nearly four million newly freed slaves? Political leaders offered various plans to help the nation heal from the conflict it had just endured.
Questions to be answered:
1. Which of the three plans do you think is best for the nation?
2. How is this the best plan for African Americans? Does it grant and enforce their new rights? Does it take away rights from others?
3. How is ths the best plan for former Confederates? Does the plan impose harsh punishments for Southerners or is it forgiving?
4. How is this the best plan for the nations future? Does the plan extend American values of freedom and liberty?
