In my research paper I will be discussing why I think the fantasy novel series written by George R.R Martin, A Song of Ice and Fire, although fictional, has many parallels to historical events and religion. My interest in this topic comes from the fact I have been a fanatic of this series and the television show derivative, A Game of Thrones since their release. Almost 60 million copies of the George R.R Martin series have been sold as of April 2015 (Wilson) and the recent season of Game of Thrones averaged 18.4 million viewers (Alter). These stats show how vast a fan base there is for the fantasy. Having read a couple of the books and watched the television series I myself am very intrigued to learn of the real life historical and religious parallel of the George R R Martins world.
Obviously, one of the main sources I will be using are the A Song of Ice and Fire novels themselves. I will mainly be using the two novels of the series I read which are A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, and A Storm of Swords. There are also many interviews online with the author George R.R. Martin himself I will be referencing. The other sources I will be using are some of the many resources regarding human history especially medieval history. This includes a book called The Wars of the Roses: Politics and the Constitution in England, C.1437-1509 by Christine Carpenter. I believe this event in history called the War of the Roses contains the most similarities to George R. R. Martins story. Also, I will be using any material I can find that can give me information to show the relation of real life religion to a game of thrones. Such materials include the Bible and other religious texts. One online article I will be using is called the Church in the Middle Ages: from dedication to dissent by Alixe Bovey. These and anything else related to my thesis I will be using for my paper.
A Song of Ice and Fire is considered a fantasy series but I believe that it holds much more comparisons to real life then we would think. With all its fans worldwide I wonder if most of them even know how many relations there are of real life history and religion to the book. I think for this reason and my interest in the story it would make an intriguing paper for myself to write and readers to read.
The above is the proposal I already wrote. There must be at least 4 sources used. Anything like this would be good.
