2. Task 1
In this lab you will start to experiment with Linux. You will need to do the following
tasks:
1) Install the VMware Player on your desktop and copy the files from the Linux
DVD to your desktop.
2) The first time you run the virtual machine, it will ask if you moved it or
copied it, select that you copied it.
3) Once the virtual machine has started you get presented with the login screen.
Task 1 is now done.
3. Task 2
Now that you have the virtual machine running, you remembered that you forgot the
password. What do you do?
1) Your first task is to reset the password for the user account ( the command is
passwd ). The user name of the user account is faculty. Hence, you should type
on in the terminal the following: passwd faculty
2) You should also reset the password for the root account.
3) Use your favorite search engine and try to find out the steps that you need to take
to accomplish this (should be about 10 12 steps, depending on the method you
use).
4. Task 3
To show that you where able to reset the password write a small report (using LaTeX)
with a few screenshot of how you rest the password. You should submit the report on
the mynotes page.
