Evolution of Juveniles Justice System

Juvenile courts are designed to deal with the criminal delinquencies committed by children. Juveniles justice is a significant and highly varied process that takes a significant role in shaping the children’s behavior. The young people who are detained after a law execution through assessing and screening by various entities and administrations are taken into the juvenile system. The evolution of the juveniles Justice system has resulted in significant structural and procedural changes in the jurisdiction process. Initially, the juvenile court was established more than a century ago in the United States of America and before that young person was regarded as small adults hence all subjected to the same sentence and punishment. Urbanization and modernity in the living standards have resulted to an increase in juvenile delinquency making a large number of children being detained (Cole, et.al 2015). Changes in the juvenile system have dramatically impacted the society and the lives of the involved young people.

Prior children who committed a crime against the law ware treated the same as adults. Later, research done by the lawmakers and other social advocates showed that the act of jailing children together with adults was making them learn adult behaviors. It was degrading as instead of the juveniles changing their behaviors they came out of the prisons experienced and ready for the criminal life taking delinquency as a career. Therefore, the urge to develop correctional institutions and juvenile court institution to be dealing with juvenile delinquency specifically. The Juvenile system has evolved from its original purpose which is stated above to enhance value addition on top of rectifying the behavior of the detained juveniles. The practical changes that are evident in today’s juvenile system are both structural and procedurally. The evolution has positively impacted the system and society as the changes are based on rectifying and making the delinquent juveniles productive and reliable people after imprisonment (Decker & Marteache 2017).

To begin with, procedural change has occurred in the process of inflicting punishment in the juvenile system. There is a change in the punishment authorization regarding court decision and the juvenile coding purpose. Various law sections related to the juvenile delinquency has been postulated to effective rectifications that will enhance a more positive view in sentencing the involved more than the will of punishing. Depending on the crime committed, the law authoritarian have to establish a relative punishment for instance regarding the detention duration that will be significant in rectifying the juvenile’s character. It also facilitates change in juvenile pronouncing judgment on statutes and correctional strategies that engage determinate, obligatory and proportionate judgments (Krohn & Lane 2015). The programs have been improvised where the juvenile is given adequate time to exercise and get exposure which is essential to their well-being.

Furthermore, there are variations regarding the appraisals of dispositional pronouncement making and state of affairs of institutional detention. The necessary facilities in juvenile courts have been improvised and made conducive for children living. The facilities that are relevant to enhancing refreshment and good health of the young people has been established. The environment where they live starting with the boarding to inspirational facilities have been developed to ensure they are impacted proportionally and their former way of living is completely eradicated. It is vital as the surroundings dramatically determine and effects person’s judgment hence the conditions are made to be the best in changing the juveniles’ to a positive and constructive thinking (Lacey, 2013).

Today, the systems put into consideration the juvenile’s life and the time that might be wasted during imprisonment. Therefore, there are facilities established to enhance their learning and adding value in their lives as their colleagues who have the freedom. Education is crucial in a human being growth path as it facilitates proper decision making and makes the individual beneficial and industrious in the society. The learning equips them with knowledge and practical skills that will be significant and of use in earning a living after the detention duration is over, and they will have something to give back to the community even during their adulthood. These learning facilities range from the primary education taught in other learning institutions to practical skills. In many cases, the children are involved in delinquency because of their parental background and the people whom they are associated with in their everyday life (Lemert, 2017). Hence, that segregation period becomes very crucial as it imposes a relevant change in their behaviors and to a great extent, there is a possibility of positively changing other people when they come back to the society.

Initially, the juvenile system was designed to act in the interest of the juvenile as contradicted by the adult antagonistic system. The juvenile system still acts in this capacity and even to a greater extent. It takes into consideration the children grow, and there are essential things they are supposed to be provided to facilitate healthy development. On the other hand, there are other things they are not supposed to be subjected to as it can be hazardous to their health and growth. For instance, education and not to be subjected to torture which can interfere with their mental and psychological development (Slobogin, 2016).

As discussed above, juvenile system has undergone positive changes that result to the provision of quality services regarding rectifying young peoples’ behavior. Hence, it is the role of the government and community at large to support them and come up with better strategies. Adoption of advanced technology is vital in equipping the juvenile with skills and knowledge that will correlate with the modern society.
