Fed Up(2014) Documentary Reflection

According to the documentary, Fed up (2014), a calorie is just not a calorie because the kind of energy each food produces matters. The best way to explain this would be by showing how 160 calories in almonds differ from 160 calories of soda. The explanation is that 160 calories of almonds contain high amounts of fiber, making it easy for the food to be absorbed immediately. As such, the blood sugar levels remain lower and for longer. On the other hand, soda does not contain fiber which makes it get absorbed through the digestive system to the liver. The liver suffers sugar rush immediately, triggering it to convert the sugar into fat. So this goes without saying that it is better to consume calories in almonds than in sugar. According to the film, a child would have to bike for one hour and fifteen minutes just to burn 20 oz of soda. From this knowledge, I gather that consuming sugar in high amounts puts one at risk of developing metabolic diseases like obesity. It is important to watch the amount of sugar they consume and consume as few calories as possible. This information is powerful as I can use it to change people’s mindsets and help them adopt more healthy feeding practices. The movies highlight a connection between sugar and cocaine because sugar makes the brain light up, like cocaine. Sugar is eight times more addictive than cocaine. So exposing children to sugar at an early age increases their chances of getting addicted. As regards school lunches, the film says that they contain high sugars, salt, and fat. School lunches are unhealthy and contribute largely to the obesity epidemic in children.

Twenty doctors publicly resigned from the American Academy of Family Physicians because Coca-Cola announced that soft drinks have nothing to do with obesity. They were not happy that their company which is meant to promote health could collude with the same organizations like Coca-Cola that continues to put their children at risk. Sugar has negative impacts on the body and can be consumed in various forms. Too much sugar in any form is dangerous, including excessive sugars, processes starch like white bread, white rice, potato products, and breakfast cereals. Processed sugars are particularly bad as they trigger hormonal responses that cause the body to produce more insulin and make the person crave more sugar. The side effect of consuming excess sugar is that it leads to chronic metabolic diseases and obesity. Weight gain comes with an increased risk of heart failure, diabetes, and skin aging. The World Health Organization decided to delete the recommended 10% daily sugar requirement from the reports because the current administration extorted them to bury it. They were told that if they published the report, they would lose 406 million dollars in donations meant to benefit the UN entity.

The advertising industry has a big impact on marketing to children because the message tends to appeal to their audience. The advertisements show junk food in wrappers with cartoons, making the advertisement more entertaining. I believe that advertisements impact the kind of decisions people make regarding food. The advertisements are appealing and designed to make the audience want to buy junk food instead of cooking healthy means. They are led into believing that a bucket of KFC is more affordable than a home-cooked healthy meal which is not true. Sometimes I feel taken advantage of because I find myself ordering in more than I should. I end up taking more junk food which is unhealthy. I can improve my diet by incorporating more fruits and vegetables and reducing the amount of sugary foods like cake and soda that I consume. I can help other people by advising them against reducing the amount of sugar they eat and exercising more. As an individual willing to bring change to other people’s lives, I would join lobbyist groups to hold governments accountable and ensure they do not knowingly mislead people into an unhealthy lifestyle. I can support such a cause to ensure they litigate helpful policies.
