Beard famously argued that the so-called “Founding Fathers” set up the US economic and political system based on their own personal economic and social interests. The famous idealization of “liberty” was just a slogan. Poor white males, all females, African-Americans, Native Americans were denied basic rights and freedoms. The system of race based slavery was invented before the Revolution and sustained after the Revolution because it personally benefited the elites at the top. When revolts by lower class white males would happen, the government would allow them to settle in frontier areas, thereby easing the social and economic pressures in the settled areas (as famously argued in Turner’s Frontier Thesis).
