Disadvantages of Pursuing Further Education
Finishing off my high school year with the thoughts of furthering my education, debating and wondering, would it even be necessary? Is college a necessity or is it inessential? With all my family members deciding for me, I was left with no choice. Many people are often urged by those close to them to go to college. But what they are not told are the many challenges that will come with being in college; debts to be incurred, mental health challenges and the juggling between time and balance. There are many reasons to pursue further education, but there are many disadvantages that come with it.
The first disadvantage of pursuing further education is that there are massive levels of debt that the student will incur. College tuition is often an expensive affair, and the other associated costs such as housing, textbooks, transportation among others add to the burden that a student and their family face. There are loans made available by the government and other institutions to help the students foot their bills. Only later will the student come to realize that their loans will be a significant burden to them in their life after college. When the student manages to secure employment after college, a large amount of their income will go towards offsetting their debt, thus setting them back on achieving their other dreams in life.
Another challenge that comes with pursuing further education is that the decision is often made at a young age before the student can weigh their options carefully. Most students have the courses that they will pursue laid out for them by family and friends, and they often bow to the pressure. They do not take time to consider their passions and factor them in when choosing a career path. They decided what is believed to be prestigious or well paying. After some time, they can end up being frustrated and even drop out of their courses. This is unfortunate since the student may already have spent a lot of time and resources. This is also a source of discouragement and disillusionment.
Further education is not an effective method of learning; apprenticeship is a better way. For most jobs, the skills sets that are required can be gained right at the workplace. The person can just identify what they would like to do, where they would want to do it and approach the business or institution of their choice. Partnerships can be created with the government to promote such arrangements which will be very beneficial. Further education means that an individual will be tied down to one field which takes up a lot of time and money and may not yield much in terms of actual skills and experience. So aside from careers that require precise training such as medicine or nursing, going to college is not worth the while.
Pursuing further education has been touted to come with a myriad of advantages. This will often pressure the young people often at an impressionable stage in life to limit or confine them to a life they may regret in the future. They may be attracted to an illusion that will later come back to haunt them. In my opinion, further education is a waste of time and resources. Students should pursue other avenues such as on the job training. The challenges that come with further education such as debts and dissatisfaction in a career can be easily avoided. Some other consequences such as mental health challenges that come with disappointment and unfulfillment can best be avoided by not pursuing higher education.
