Read through Assignment 1: Getting to Know Pedigree Lab: Inheritance of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) by clicking on the Assignments tab located in the Pedigree Lab. This assignment is designed to help you become familiar with the operation of Pedigree Lab.
1. Select two mutations from the mutation list and perform the following: Study several full pedigrees and then develop a hypothesis to explain the mode of inheritance for the mutation.

2. For the same two mutations, perform the following: Use the large family pedigree function to identify pedigrees with parents that you might use to look for recombination. Think carefully about the mode of inheritance for the trait and then decide whether to answer yes or no to the three questions asking you to define whether the trait is expressed in grandparents, parents, and offspring before searching the Large Family database.
3. Copy and post your recombination data below for any probes used to search for linkage.
4. Once you have found the chromosomal location for the mutation, test all of the other probes on that chromosome linked to the mutation so you may better refine and pinpoint the location of the trait relative to the markers on the chromosome. Your goal is to develop as accurate a map as possible. Copy and paste your chromosome map below when you are done.
