Question
essay about watching debate
Watch at least one 20 minute segment of the Debate
– if you can’t watch any of it ‘live’ tonight, FIND a 20 segment of it tomorrow; there will no doubt be many portions of it, if not the entire debate, all over the internet and probably even on some cable news TV channels.
– Give me a brief explanation/description/background on what segment of the debate you are analyzing, such as, what were they talking about, specifically, during that segment, and during which they used the appeals you chose to list in Part II:
II Identify at least FOUR (4) examples of any of the Appeals
– this means, write down at least four examples you hear or can pick out, from EITHER CANDIDATE- or some from one and some from the other, or all from one, etc. As long as you come up with FOUR examples.
– you do not need to find four examples from Hillary and another four from Trump, that is. Just four from ‘anywhere.’
– you also do not need to find ‘one of each’, or: one example of ethos; one example of pathos; and one example of logos; although that would be great if you DO. But, you might notice three great logos examples and a great pathos; or two bad logos and a good one and then an ethos, etc. It’s mix and match.
Reminder: if you hear ‘good reasons’, ‘logical solutions’, ‘things that make common sense’ , these fall intoLogos. So do the use of statistics, data, ‘studies’, and so forth.
Referring to or using an outside source is probably going to be ethos, good OR bad: Referring to the United Nations, the US Constitution, Martin Luther King, etc — all inspire ‘good’ ethos (believability/credibility; trustworthiiness; respected; good character, etc.) Hitler; Hate groups; murderers; Putin — are going to be used as ‘bad ethos’ — who wants them, they are not liked, trusted, respected, etc.
Anything designed to provoke any kind of feeling is pathos: fear; pride; guilt; nervousness; confidence; riches; security; chaos; and so on.
III The Candidates’ Personal Ethos
Ethos is presented by a writer or speaker not only through which source they use to help bolster their arguments in the area of trustworthiness, good character, believability; expert; etc…but it is also conveyed through how they speaker/writer presents THEMSELVES. That is, how do THEY come across? Do THEY have a distinct style and personality in how they ‘look’, talk, and most importantly, ARGUE? Is it one that seems to HAVE good ethos, or bad, or just blah? Do they seem prepared, knowledgeable, rational, polite, calm, ‘likeable’ or at least not offensive? or are they the opposite? or do they have good ethos moments and also bad ones — some things you like about them and feel that they are trustworthy and a decent character, but then something else they said or did might be something that you didn’t like about them.
SO, in this section, I simply want to know what your overall sense of each candidate’s ‘personal ethos’ was, with your reasons why. How did they come across to you ‘as a person’; or, what ‘image’ do you feel they projected, and examples of why.
Again, this is informal, but I want the various questions answered clearly.
