ENGLISH 28COMPARE/CONTRAST ESSAY
The next essay, in which you will compare two sides of a larger topic, is due Thursday, June 30, at the beginning of class. It is to be four pages, typed, double-spaced, with a non-generic title.
The paper is very specific in terms of where to gather the supportive sources. You can write on any topic listed on the Energy and Environmentalism page from the Opposing Viewpoints in Context database. To get to that database:
Go to the LACC homepage à Click the Library tab on the left-hand side of the page; this will get you to the Library home page à Click the Search Periodicals/Databases tab on the right-hand side of the page; this will get you to the Periodicals/Databases page, and all of the databases you have access to as a student. [If you are using a campus computer in the library or lab, you can get there without password access. If you use a home computer or have access off campus, you might have to include your login and password.] à Click the Opposing Viewpoint in Context tab on the left-hand side under Magazines, Journals, and/or Newspapers à There you will see the Opposing Viewpoints in Context page and its listings of possible topics. à Go to the Energy and Environmentalism tab and click View all next to it. There is a list of all of the topics you can use for this paper, from Activism to Western US Drought. Choose one of these topics.
When you click on the topic, you can have access to many newspaper articles, journals, academic research, statistics, etc., covering that topic. Note that each topic has an overview at the top of the page, which can be used as part of your introduction. Choose at least two sources (articles, research, data) that each show the opposing viewpoints on the topic.
Now, the essay: In the introduction, you need to present the topic to the reader. So, if, say, you are writing about global warming, you can use the overview to begin the paper, maybe find the most recent article or event surrounding that topic. A sample introduction would be:
In the first part of this century, many countries have seen a number of natural disasters that scientists have linked to global warming, also known as climate change. For instance, [c]rowded landfills, polluted water, and poor air quality are just a few of the environmental problems that affect both industrial and developing nations. (Global Warming).
[Note: there is no author to this source, so for in-text citation you must use the title of the article.] Then you must give a thesis that compares the two opposing sides to the topic. For instance:
While many critics have argued that environmental changes are not decisively linked to man-made activities, more and more scientists are proving that there is a connection.
Then, in each body part of the essay, you want to present one side. You can start with a perspective, then the other, making sure that the order parallels the order in the thesis (in this case, you would explain opponents views and then supporters arguments). OR you can break down the arguments into subtopics, such as costs vs. safety; business regulation vs. environmental concerns; etc. Either way, make sure your essay presents each side fairly and evenly. Also, make sure to use two or more sources as support for the positions, for and against.
Finally, in the conclusion, you can give your opinion about the topic, either favoring one side over the other. Remember, this is NOT a persuasion essay. Along with the essay, provide a work-citation page, using the appropriate MLA format.
