Life History Interview Project
SOC 340: Barmon
Proposal Due: September 21st 10:50am
Mandatory Rough Draft Due: November 14th 10:50am
Final Draft Due: December 14th 1:00 pm
Purpose: This assignment requires you to look at everyday life for an older person (over the age
of 65) outside of your classroom and away from academic environment. You will conduct an
interview and analyze the interview in terms of concepts covered in class. Then you will write a
paper discussing what you saw and comparing it to previous research.
Life history interviews provide a way for you to connect an individuals life to a social and
historical context. Rather than seeing someones life as a collection of individual choices, this
gives us the opportunity to see their choices within the context of their lives-paying particular
attention to the influence of family, work, community, and historical events.
The interview questions should be focused on the theoretical constructs that we discuss in classparticularly
life-course theory and successful aging. Questions should concentrate on the
persons background, significant social events and relationships in the persons life, the changing
social roles throughout history, social support, and health behaviors. Also include the
individuals assessment of their own life, retirement (or not), and the aging experience. It is also
important to include experiences with social inequality and diversity. You will develop a list of
questions that will prompt the older adult you interview to share insights related to the themes,
concepts, and issues we explore in class.
Proposal of Paper. You must turn in a proposal for your paper by September 21st
. The
proposal should be approximately one page longno longer than two. All proposals
should include: Who you are planning to interview and why. What about their life makes
you initially interested in interviewing them? What historical events have they lived
through? Give some examples of questions you plan to ask as well as how those relate
back to life-course and successful aging concepts.
Writing the Paper. Write a 8-10 page typed (double-spaced) paper relating the interview
to theories and perspectives on aging you have learned in this class. Your essay should
make a theoretical argument about aging and society using the interview to illustrate your
argument. Conclude by discussing what you learned and how this changed your
understanding of aging. Follow the requirements for report write up listed below:
In the paper discuss the significance of your observation and compare to previous
research and key concepts discussed in class or in texts. Each paper should include
(approximate length of each section in parentheses, this is only a guideline):
A Introduction. This should be an introduction to the paper. You should tell the
reader what the paper is about, what you did, what theoretical questions you are
answering (in particular, questions regarding life course sociology and successful
aging, what your interview answers, why it is important to study sociology of
aging life and conduct history research (~1-1.5 pages).
B. Methods. Describe who you interviewed and why? Who did you interview? Why
did you choose this person? Where did you conduct the interview? How did you
go about summarizing and analyzing the interview? What questions regarding life
course sociology or successful aging can this interview answer? (~.5-1 page)
C. Results. Summarize the interview. This should not be a list of interview questions
and answers but a coherent narrative of the subjects history (~2-3 pages)
C. Discussion. This section is the most significant section of the paper. This is
should be an analysis of your interview subjects history framed within the
context of life course and/or successful aging. Use concepts from the class (such
as ageism, life course and functional age) to explain what you saw. Discuss how
their age or generation impacts their understanding of their life? You must
connect that you saw to ideas, concepts, and theories from class. (3-6 pages).
D. Conclusion Discuss the overall conclusions of the paper. Reiterate the answers to
your theoretical questions as well as what we still do not know. Outline what
issues you think are important to study about this topic in the future. Are there
practical implications of what you saw in terms of policies that should be
developed or changed? What else could researchers, and practitioners in the field
of aging learn from this research? (~1-2 pages).
E. Reflection. Reflect on experience of interview research. What could you have
done differently? How do you feel about what you learned? Are there any
limitations to your observation? (~1-1.5 pages)
F. References. No outside source is required, but each student is expected to cite the
textbook in your paper. Each paper should include a list of references, even if the
Hooyman text is the only citation in the paper. Students are encouraged to use
other materials to supplement their discussion.
G. Appendix. The appendix should include your interview guide (a copy of the
questions you asked in your interview).
6. Rough Draft. A rough draft is required for this project. Rough drafts are to be as close as
possible to the final product. They should be typed and in essay format. Rough drafts
are due November 14th.
7. Final Draft. The final draft should incorporate feedback from the rough draft. When you
turn in the final draft you must turn in a copy of the rough draft. Final Drafts due
