In Fitzgerald’s novel, the use of setting is one of the main focus during the course of the story. Place and time convey ideas and also help the reader getting powerful images. It is set in the 1920s and shows how the American Dream collapses in an era of wealth and materialism. When we talk about where the novel takes place, we can separate into two main sections East Egg which represents old money, the people that live there have inherited all of their fortunes. The second section is West Egg, this is where Gatsby lives and represents new money the people who were living in the East were seen as corrupts. Last but not least, The Valley of Ashes is also one of the most symbolic places during the course of the novel, this one represents the decay and poorness, and it is seen as a colorless and desolate city full of ashes and without nothing to offer.
Gatsby’s hometown reflects his character. Fitzgerald represents the Midwest as with hopeful spirit, old values and humble origins this can also represent the admiration and sympathy Nick feels for Gatsby. The perseverance, hopes and dreams that Gatsby feel are something which can be seen as out of his reach. He tries to get something he will never accomplish, but his attitude and his will to fight for the American Dream and reaching the green light are what gets him killed. Throughout the course of the story, there is a point where we deduce the humble origins of Gatsby, this is when he tries to punch Tom. At that time to get out your temper was something unseen in wealthy and social class raised people.
